STOCKHOLM

THE SHORT HISTORY OF STOCKHOLM: 1252 - 2008

The first settlement on the territory of Stockholm dates back to the age of 1000 AD. But it was in 1252 that Stockholm's name was first mentioned as a name of a town. It was founded by Birger Jarl, the King of Sweden. Stockholm was proclaimed the capital of The Kingdom of Sweden in 1634.

The building of Stockholm began on the isle of Stadsholmen. The town was very quickly getting larger towards the North and the South. Thanks to the fact that Stockholm was founded between the lake of Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, it gained a very strong strategic position as a fortress.

In the middle ages Stockholm had a well-established business connections with the Union of Hansa, with Lubeck, Denmark. The town of Stockholm was a well-known place for copper- and iron-trading and selling other goods as well. The town was, during certain times, under the influence of Germany and later Denmark. In the 16th century the town and the crown were captured by Denmark.

Stockholm has had another powerful figure in its history. It was Gustav Vasa. Gustav Vasa led the revolution against the Danes and became the King of Sweden in 1523. After that the town developed much better and faster, having periods of prosperity and success. A lot of goods were earned during the wars.

Nowadays Stockholm, is a large industrial, business and cultural city. Stockholm has much to suggest to its visitors and is fantastic. Wonderful landscapes, beautiful old buildings, rich museums, unforgettable entertainments and attractions – all that is waiting for tourists in Stockholm.









GAMLA STAN

Gamla Stan is the oldest part of Stockholm. Here one can wonder about narrow streets and enjoy the spirit of a middle-aged town. Many of Stockholm's attractions are situated here.

Gamla Stan houses the Börshuset - the former Stock house, that is situated in the historical centre of the town, was built in 1778 at the Stortorget. For ages this square had been the place of meetings for people and for open air markets. The museum of Alfred Nobel is situated in the building of Börshuset at Stortorget.

Gamla Stan is among the best best shopping places in the city. It has also a lot of restaurants, bars and café. Here you can buy well-known and famous Swedish handicrafts and souvenirs: goods made from the reinhorns, famous Swedish crystal of "Orrefors" and "Kosta Boda", ceramics. Many antique boutiques are situated in Gamla Stan.

The Royal Palace or "Kungliga Slottet" is also situated in the oldest part of the city, in Gamla Stan. The huge wooden palace of the royal dynasty of Gustav Vasa was situated on this place. The Royal Palace with its 608 rooms is fascinating. It is one of the main attractions of the city of Stockholm.

Obelisk near The Palace was built and devoted to the citizens of the town who helped in the war against Russia in 17th century.

Gamla Stan houses the Cathedral of Stockholm or "Storkyrkan". It is more than 700 years old. The first church service in Sweden was held at The Cathedral of Stockholm. All weddings and coronations of the Swedsih Royal Families have taken place here. The present King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf was also married here in 1976.









GLOBEN ARENAS

The famous Stockholm Globen Arena is the biggest spheric building in the world. The building which was built in 1989 has a very impressive construction. It is used for sport activities and public performances. Many famous singers use to hold their performances here. However the main purpose of the sport arena is ice-hockey and football matches.
One can find a museum of sport on the territory of Globen Arena. The admission fee there is 20 krones.
The complex of Globen Arenas includes also a large shopping center with more than 40 shops, many restaurants, pubs, cafés,  banks and a post office.
The Quality Hotel Globe lies near the Globen Arena and the shopping center.










ARCHIPELAGO

The famous archipelago of Stockholm that consists of 24 thousand islands can be easily reached right from the city centre. One can easily get there by boat. There is a regular connection between Stockholm Archipelago and the hamns of Strömkajen and Strandvägen in the centre of the town.

You can enjoy a wonderful cruise to the Stockholm Archipelago on a modern high-speed boat or alternatively on a slow-speed "old-fashioned" ship. It takes less than half an hour to reach there.

The archipelago includes thousands of small islands. It is the ideal place for fishing. Among other interesting archipelago islands are Sandhamn, Fjäderholmarna, Vaxholm.

SANDHAMN is a small town that is very popular among the fans of windsurfing.
VAXHOLM is well-known for its gallery collection of paintings. There are some hotels and restaurants here.
FJÄDERHOLMARNA are very intersting for children, there are to a lot of outdoor games and other activities there.










DJURGÅRDEN

Djurgården or "The Royal Animal Park" is the oldest in the world nature reservation inside a city. It is the most popular place among Swedes and tourists. It is worth to get there by the only tramway line in the capital which runs through the whole isle of Djurgården. Here are situated many important attractions of the Stockholm city, for example: Skansen, Nordiska Museet, Junibacken, Vasamuseet, Gröna Lund, Rosendals Slott, Waldemarsudde, Tobaks & Tändsticks Museum and others.
