VASAMUSEET

A military ship, named "Vasa" was built in 1628. During that time Sweden was in war with Poland. Unfortunately, the ship sank during her virgin voyage. There were 150 people on board. Thirty of them died in the disaster. The ship laid on the bottom of the harbour for more than 300 years.
The "Vasa" was built at the town's shipyard by Henrik Hybertsson - a Dutch shipbuilder. The ship was intended to be strongest warship in the world. The armament of "Vasa" included 64 guns and had two gundecks. The crew consisted of 450 men, including 300 soldiers onboard.
In 1961 the ship was brought up onto the surface. It has undergone careful restoration and now is exposed in the building which was built specially for it.
Vasa Museum is the purpose-built building that has a very special architectural form.
It is one of the most popular places among tourists. Regular exibitions devoted to the history of the ship take place here.
